Panfontein Geosynthetics Review

Panfontein Geosynthetics Review

Company News Monday, July 8, 2013: Gast International SA (Pty) Ltd

panfontein1

Rand Water situated in Panfontein is a water service provider that purifies 3 600 megalitres of water per day and distributes clean drinking water to 58 reservoirs, via 3 000 km of pipelines, to 19 water service authorities. They service 11 million people in Gauteng and parts of Mpumalanga, North West and Free State provinces.

Rand Water extracts its raw water from the Vaal Dam via a canal and a gravity pipeline, and by pumping from the Vaal River Baggage Reservoir at Lethabo, Zuikerbosch and Veereeniging. A small quantity of water is also extracted from underground sources at Zuurbekom. After the water has been extracted it must undergo a purification process required to ensure that the water meets the stringent standards set for drinkable water. The purification process involves seven stages which are closely monitored.

Rand Water has undertaken major renovations to ageing infrastructure, related mostly to augmentation and rehabilitation which is scheduled over 5 years.

Contractors

Liviero Civils has been appointed as the main contractor for the project which is amounting to R254 million. They are currently working on expansion of capacity and modification for the supernatant pipelines.

GAST

Liviero Civils in turn appointed GAST as a subcontractor to supply and install 1.5mm high density polyethylene (HDPE) to 20 residue ponds at the site. The total working area is 785 000m² with the project value set at R25 million. Due to weather considerations the work is scheduled into two winter installations and is set to be completed by 2014. Site establishment commenced on the 12th of April 2013 involving setting up site offices, offloading material etc. Gast will commence work at the Rand Water’s Panfontein residue disposal site towards the middle of August 2013.

GAST designed a spiking system in order to offload the containers holding the geomembrane rolls. This system has improved efficiency by reducing offloading times. GAST worked through a 36 hour shift to offload 795 000m² worth of material from over 48 X 40ft Containers.

The Geomembrane system will be installed onto a protective geotextile to ensure the efficiency of the system required. Working closely with Intatakusa Consulting and Bigen Africa, GAST will ensure total client satisfaction.
