High Speed Ruggedized Fiber-to-USB Converters

High Speed Ruggedized Fiber-to-USB Converters

Product News Wednesday, February 17, 2010: Electro Standards Laboratories

Electro Standards Laboratories (ESL), Cranston, RI, manufactures 3 configurations of High Speed Ruggedized Interface Converters that provide efficient network solutions for several major Government National Laboratories. Conveniently available as encased, board-only, or DIN rail mounted configurations, these Fiber-to-USB Interface Converters are ideal for PC communications requiring high speed, secure communications and optical isolation.

These innovative Fiber-to-USB converters provide integrated rate buffering and convert USB 2.0 compliant data from a standard PC to a serial asynchronous data interface over fiber with a user-selectable baud rate of up to 3Mbps. Applications include constructing an optically isolated point-to-point communication link between the USB ports of two PC’s, or an optically isolated high speed communication link between a PC and a serial data network subjected to a high EMI environment that might corrupt the communication over a copper interface.

These units feature ESD protection circuitry on the USB I/O connector with power inputs protected from transients and feature 3kVDC isolation to prevent system ground loops. Other features include user-selectable fiber polarity, user-selectable asynchronous data format, dual DB9 power connectors (board only Model 4166) for convenience in bused power applications and Tx, Rx and Power indicator LEDs.

This interface converter is available as the Model 4166 board only with front-mounting threaded brackets for rack mounting in embedded applications. It is also available in a desktop package, Model 4165 or with DIN rail mounting hardware, Model 4165-DIN for applications that require an enclosure.
