Company Description
ELECTRICAL MOULDED COMPONENTS (PTY) LTD (EMC as we are known today) was formed in 1973 by Mr. R. R. Braun and Mr. A G. Daus. The first six years were taken up with research and development of ideal epoxy resins and formulations. Production began in 1979. Mr. L. M. Fick joined the company as a shareholder and director in 1986. Fred Daus, the Managing Director is responsible for finance, marketing and export sales. Rob Braun, the Technical Director is responsible for plant, factory and design and Thinus Fick, the Manufacturing Director being responsible for production.
The first range of products were related to the electric motor industry. This range consists of Sliprings, Terminal Boxes, Fans, Brush Box Holders and Rocker Rings and is extensive. Following this the company began making customised components for the medium and high voltage switchgear industry and today is supplier to all the multinational manufacturers such as ALSTOM, GROUP SCHNEIDER, ABB, SIEMENS, etc. An enormous range of insulators and bushings, DIN and specials are in the program and can be had “off the shelf”. In 1987 the big break through of Cycloaliphatic Resin insulators for overhead lines was accomplished and EMC was awarded 50% of the ESKOM National Contract. (ESKOM being South Africa’s national utility company and about the fifth largest utility world wide). This contract has been awarded on an ongoing basis since then and more than three million Cycloaliphatic insulators are in service in South Africa. Wall bushings used in Kiosks and transformer bushings for distribution transformers also play a very large part in the EMC manufacturing program with some 25000 bushings produced monthly in voltages up to 33kV.
The company presently exports to Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, France, England, Norway, Sweden, Finland, America, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Thailand, Egypt, The Middle East, Brazil and most of the neighbouring Southern African countries below the Equator. EMC currently employs approximately 130 people, working 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. We have a modern and comprehensive toolroom wherein we employ six toolmakers. All tooling is made on site at a vastly reduced rate to that of European toolrooms. This gives us an edge when new developments are planned by our clients as start-up costs are kept to a minimum.
