Zambian copper mining industry is powered by Cummins
Company News Wednesday, May 22, 2013: Cummins Diesel South Africa
1 April 2013
Heavy-duty mining machinery is only as reliable as the engine that powers it, which is why the Cummins range of engines has gained more than 60 per cent market share in the Zambian copper mining industry since entering the market 26 years ago.
USA-based Cummins is a global-leader in the manufacture, sales and servicing of diesel engines and related technology, and Cummins country manager for Zambia Jan Holtzhuizen points out that the company currently supplies more than 150 engines to three of the largest copper mines in Zambia.
“The Cummins brand of engines has consistently gained popularity in the Zambian copper mining sector since its introduction in 1986, due to the fact that the high power engines have been proven to withstand the harsh operating environment,” he notes.
Holtzhuizen notes that the two most popular brands of Cummins engines that are used in the open cast Zambian copper mining industry are the QSK50 and the K2000E, which power a wide range of earthmoving machinery, including wheel loaders, haul trucks, excavators and large loading shovels.
“The Cummins QSK50 is a new-generation electric engine that has gained considerable ground in the international mining sector, due to the fact that these 50 l, 1400 hp engines have a lower operating cost per ton compared to similar sized mining engines,” he continues.
According to Holtzhuizen, the Cummins range of advanced QSK50 engines are among the most environmentally friendly in the world, and are fully compliant with Tier II low emission standards set out by the American government’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
“Compliance with EPA specifications ensures that Cummins QSK50 engines minimise environmental damage by generating clean power, while increasing fuel efficiency and lowering operating costs, without affecting the power of the engine. Although EPA specifications are not a legal requirement in Zambia yet, it places local fleet owners and mining houses in the perfect position to stay one step ahead of the game by adopting the new technology at an early stage,” he explains.
Holtzhuizen highlights the fact that the 50 l, 16 cylinder Cummins K2000E mechanically-operated engine has proven itself to be a tried-and-trusted product in the Zambian copper mining industry for more than 15 years. “The older diesel powered Cummins K2000E engine boasts robust and reliable fuel systems and electronic controls, which has made it the preferred engine to power all types of earthmoving equipment in the most challenging mining applications in Zambia,” he continues.
Cummins Zambia is based in Chingola – a town that is at the heart of the country’s copper mining industry. “The branch employs 32 staff members in different departments ranging from sales and support, to servicing and repairs,” adds Holtzhuizen. “Cummins Zambia sets itself apart from the local competition thanks to its unrivalled turnaround times, which have been achieved due to the fact that our larger clients have a dedicated Cummins Zambia representative working onsite, in order to ensure that any challenges related to the engines are dealt with swiftly and effectively.”
As large amounts of investment continues to pour into the Zambian copper mining industry, Holtzhuizen remains confident of the future outlook for Cummins Zambia. “The Zambian copper mining industry is experiencing considerable growth, and I believe that this growth will continue for the next five years, placing us in a commanding position in the local market.”
Cummins has a global network of 500 company-owned and independent distributor facilities at more than 5 200 dealer locations in over 190 countries. In addition to open cast copper mining, the Cummins range of engines is used in a wide variety of applications, including; trucking, boating, power-generation, construction and agriculture. Established in 1919 in Indiana, USA, Cummins today employs more than 40 000 people worldwide, and has an annual turnover of US $10,8-billion.
